Hi there!
How are you dear One Language’ Friends?
This week we asked one of our teachers to share his experience with English language and this is what he commented…
“My name is Andres and I’m an English teacher, or Tool-giver if we think of English as a tool. This is the first blog entry I share with you so I would like to tell you about my personal experience with English language.
I’ll tell you not only about my relationship with the language as a speaker of it, but also as a teacher who’s constantly trying to help others improve their English skills.
I started learning English when I was very young but let’s say I was nothing like the best student in the class. In fact, it was very difficult for me to express myself through English because I couldn’t understand a word. Over the years, thanks to school, music and video games I was able to improve but I wasn’t an expert… At least I could express myself and be understood by others, an ability that was, and remains, very important for me. I also had the opportunity to interact with native speakers of English so I was improving little by little. Then, when I started the university to become an English teacher, my English skills improved considerably in a very short time. While studying there I had great opportunities that allowed me to take my skills in this language to a whole new level. I was a FIFA volunteer during the U-17 World Cup in 2015 and I could travel to Australia in 2019 thanks to a state scholarship.
If you want to know more about these 2 experiences I’d be delighted to share the details on another blog post.
Summing up, all these experiences allowed me to understand that English is not only a language that sounds nice when being spoken. As a teacher, I know that this language is much more than that. Moreover, in my short time teaching, I have known different realities and I have seen how my students long for changing their lives but sadly English is “extremely boring” or they don’t understand a word. In these situations, I try to explain the advantages of English and what kind of things they could accomplish with this tool. I show them examples of people that were in a similar situation and could move forward significantly. I tell them about my experience with the language and try to give my best so they are amazed by the tool they may acquire, which will lead them to new horizons.
As popularly said, English opens many doors, but not only in the professional field. It allows us to interact with people from all over the world and to get to know different realities. Thanks to that, we nurture ourselves and improve as a person. Also, the access to information increases considerably, the cultural exchange is amazing and the wide variety of stories behind each person is unbelievable. All these are some of the things you can achieve with English, and there are many more.
